Anti-Aging Body Care for the Unapologetic Woman Over 40
"They" say you can’t lose weight after 40.
It’s hard. It’s a challenge. It’s impossible. Hormones. Menopause. Whatever. We’ve all heard it and somehow have been made to believe it.
But I say it’s a myth! 🤥
How do I know it’s a myth? Well, because I’m 45 and I lost over 20 pounds this year.
What’s not a myth, though, is that if you lose 20 pounds you will have excess skin as a consequence and you’ll be wondering if the weight loss was worth all the saggy skin left on your stomach, legs, arms, and neck.
However, I can tell you that you can have both – weight loss and tight skin. Just follow these 5 tips on how to tighten your skin after weight loss naturally and you’ll be loving the newer, slimmer you – with tight body skin!
So here’s my story.
I want to share my story with you today so that you can see that it's possible to keep your skin tight when losing weight even after 40.
My weight issues started when I was about 10 years old. We had just moved into our fourth house - and my third school – in six months. A lot of change and uncertainty for a kid to go through... I was an only child of a single mom who worked six days a week and so I often felt pretty lonely. This was the time I started stealing coins my mom used to collect in a bronze bowl and secretly go down to the store and buy chocolate. And I’d binge on 2 or 3 chocolate bars in the space of less than an hour and not even feel sick. Food became my comfort and my companion and, over the next decades, I’d automatically seek it out whenever I felt lonely or was experiencing difficult times. And so in my teens and adulthood my weight yo-yoed up and down depending on my happiness or the amount of sport I was doing.
From 125 pounds to 175 and back, then up again...
It was when I was 25 that I was at my heaviest. I’d gone from 125 pounds to 175 in a few years and, after I had finally ditched an unhappy relationship and found my dream job, it was time to get back into shape. At 25 that was extremely easy. All I did was eat celery for dinner and take a spinning class 6 nights a week. In about 9 months I was down to my desired weight – and my 25-year-old skin was as tight as a brand new elastic band. No sag anywhere to be found.
But the emotional binge eating and weight yo-yoing continued through the years. A husband, career, and 2 kids later, I found myself at 40 feeling more challenged and overwhelmed than ever. Every working mom will know what I’m talking about. For about 3 years in a row, I’d manage to lose a few pounds in the summer only to put it all back on - and then some - in the winter. And I thought I’d never be able to lose it all and keep it off if I didn’t do an insane amount of sport like I had done in my 20s. Who has time for 6 spinning classes a week in their 40s and 50s?
Desperate, hopeless and loathing myself, I finally did come across a long-lasting solution in the form of correcting my nutrition – not just about eating celery and keeping your mouth shut, but through listening to your body and feeding it proper nutrition to keep it healthy, produce the right hormones, curb the sugar cravings, reduce inflammation, and, shed the pounds. I lost over 20 pounds and have kept it off!

Every time I’d stand on the scale or try on my old clothes to discover that they fit again (no way!), I’d be jumping for joy. However, all this euphoria was wiped out the moment I took a closer look. It became clear to me that 45 year-old skin doesn't bounce back like 25 year-old skin does.😵
I can tell you from first-hand experience that your body skin loses its strength and elasticity as we age. This is because it slows down its collagen and elastin production, making the skin’s structure weaker, thinner and less elastic. Furthermore, after weight gain, the skin has been stretched out for a long period of time having damaged the remaining collagen and elastin fibers us older gal’s still have left. The result of losing weight after 45? Saggy body skin that hangs from your neck, arms, legs, buttocks, and belly area. This saggy skin is often called crepey skin due to its crepe paper-like texture.

This is how my body looked after weight loss:
So after having lost 20 pounds, I still had a poor body image. But, like you, I’m a go-getter and I wasn’t going to settle with feeling less than exhilarated with my results. And I wasn’t about to cover myself up for the next three decades. I wanted to wear a bikini again, show of my décolleté, and wear shorts.
If you’ve read any of my other blog posts, then you’ll know that I’m not a fan of plastic surgery. The scalpel gives me the shivers and, because I know a lot about skincare, I know there are other methods that are effective to tighten loose skin. (Note: to be honest, loose skin after losing a significantly large amount of weight may require surgery.) But don’t consider surgery until you try this: 👇👇
Here are the 5 expert tips how to tighten loose skin after weight loss.
This is one of the best ways to build muscle mass. Muscle will fill out the space under the excess skin and improve the appearance of loose skin.
You may still have really stubborn fat (subcutaneous fat) under your skin, which would make your loose skin hang more. Pinch the loose skin area, if you can get hold of more than a few millimeters, then this is the case.
Collagen – Collagen is an abundant protein in your body that plays many key roles, including giving your skin its structure. The intake of extra collagen supplements can strengthen your skin, add hydration and increase elasticity. Collagen may also promote weight loss and a faster metabolism.
Gelatin – Gelatin can increase the production of collagen which improves skin elasticity. You’ll commonly see gelatin in many sweets, so it’s best to take this as a supplement on its own.
Fish Oil – A great overall supplement that also helps improve skin elasticity.
These are important to help boost the production of collagen and elastin:
Protein: Adequate protein is vital for healthy skin and play a direct role in collagen production.
Vitamin C: Vitamin C is needed for collagen synthesis and also helps protect skin from sun damage.
Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3 fatty acids in fatty fish may help increase skin elasticity.
Water: Women who increased their daily water intake had significant improvements in skin hydration and function.
Body firming creams are proven to tighten loose body skin and reverse crepey skin. Experts agree that a body skin care creams with collagen-forming ingredients can visibly help firm the skin. Firming lotions and creams are used for their ability to increase collagen levels by targeting biochemical processes involved in collagen production and breakdown.

Do you use a body moisturizer after the shower? Maybe now it’s time to take your body skincare routine up a notch and try a body firming cream. They provide your skin all the nutrient-rich hydration it needs while firming and toning saggy, crepey skin, increasing the elasticity of your skin.
To find a skincare system that will effectively reduce the appearance of crepey skin on the neck, chest/décolletage, arms, hands, knees, legs, and stomach, make sure to choose one with several steps and the right ingredients.
Typically, you’ll want to start with a body scrub. Exfoliants remove dead skin and improve circulation, speeding up the process of new skin regeneration. After exfoliation, you’ll want a deep moisturizer that can replace lost oils and encourage the production of collagen to boost elasticity. It’s also valuable to seek out products specifically for the neck and chest since these areas often have long vertical lines (fountain lines) that make treatment more difficult.
If you’re like me and it’s your neck skin that’s having trouble bouncing back, then check out my blog post, “How To Choose The Best Neck Firming Cream.”
Look for these skin firming ingredients:
Matrixyl 3000: A revolutionary skincare innovation, this combination of 2 “super peptides” boosts collagen and elastin production, making it a formidable fighter against crepey skin to help the skin retain its elasticity, strength, and firmness.
Wakame Bioferment (Aka Fermented Seaweed): Seaweed is extremely nourishing and hydrating, leaving skin plump and soft.

Natural oils and butters: Since our skin naturally produces less oil as we age, products with oils and butters, especially organic oils and butters, are effective to boost hydration and increase elasticity.
Vitamin C and Peptides: These promote healthy collagen production, boosting elasticity in the skin by repairing damage done by free radicals and the sun.
Hyaluronic Acid: Hyaluronic acid is intensely hydrating, allowing for the skin around the neck and chest to become more plump and firm.
